Caption: False colour scanning electron micrograph of the leaf surface of marram grass, Ammophila arenaria. Marram grass is important in coastal ecology, since it is one of the commonest species to stabalise sand dunes. It is frequently planted for this purpose. The leaf is designed to conserve water & withstand salt. It is deeply grooved, with the stomata (breathing pores) set in the bottom of the grooves to prevent excessive evaportation. The leaf surface is covered in a dense wax, which protects the plant against drying conditions. The spines discourage foraging animals in an environment already short of food. Magnification X 117 at 35mm size. Original is BW print b745/166.
