Caption: False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of scutiform (shield-shaped) leaf hairs, or trichomes, on the undersurface of a leaf from the Japanese evergreen shrub Eleagans pungens maculata. The shrub is widely grown for its foliage, which is yellow & green on top ("maculata") & brown underneath. This is due to the elaborate, overlapping leaf hairs, which completely shield the leaf pores or stomata that regulate gaseous exchange with the environment & so prevent water loss during dry conditions or high winds. Magnification: x24 at 35mm size. Green tint (leech). Reference: MICROCOSMOS, figure 4.18, page 75.
