Caption: Mask for protection from plague. A protective mask being used to combat pneumonic plague. In the early 20th century, the world's last great plague outbreak occurred in Manchuria, China. Plague is caused by the bacterium Pasteurella pestis found in rat fleas and comes in three forms: bubonic, septicemic and pneumonic. The latter can spread from human to human without the presence of rat fleas and was the form found in Manchuria.
