Caption: Zouave ambulance crew demonstrating the removal of wounded soldiers from the field during the American Civil War. The Zouave were a unit of the Union army, modelled on the French Zouave infantry. At the beginning of the American civil war neither side had working ambulance crews or effective medical logistics. Both realised soon into the war how necessary they were.
