Caption: Hospital ward in sixteenth century Paris reproduced in "A Short History of Medicine" by Charles Singer, Clarendon Press, 1928. The ward is run by nuns who minister to the sick, elderly & dying. At left a nun folds the hands of a dying patient, while a priest administers the sacrament to the neighbouring patient. Two nuns sew shrouds in the foreground (left), while on the right the normal hospital routine is in progress. At centre, a royal figure is praying. An altar is in the background.
