Caption: Maternity ward. Illustration of a maternity ward during the 19th century. The furnishings in the ward are simple, with wooden beds, bare floor boards and a fire (at left) for heating water and drying sheets. During the early 19th century doctors did not appreciate the importance of washing their hands between deliveries and many women were infected with puerperal fever (vaginal sepsis) after giving birth. Image of the Middlesex Hospital in London, UK, in 1808.
