Caption: Polarised light micrograph of a vertical section through a leaf of the evergreen shrub, Camellia japonica, showing the vascular bundle (pink, lip- shaped) which runs through the centre of the main vein. The vascular bundle is composed of xylem, which supplies the leaf with sap from the roots, and phloem, which carries away the products of photosynthesis for distribution to the rest of the plant. A smaller bundle is seen to the right of the main one. Magnification: x36 at 4x5-inch size.
