Caption: Light micrograph of the surface of a leaf from an elder tree, Sambucus nigra, showing stomata embedded in the epidermis. Stomata are breathing pores which regulate the exchange of gases between the leaf's interior & the atmosphere. Stomatal closure is a natural response to darkness or drought. Each stoma is controlled by the water content within a pair of cells flanking its central pore. The arrangement is such that when these guard cells increase in turgidity their inner walls bow away from each other and widen the stoma. Conversely when the guard cells become flaccid the stoma closes. Magnification: x400 at 35mm size.
