Caption: Plastic surgery. Gaspare Tagliacozzi's (1545-99) method of plastic surgery for repairing the lip by using a graft of skin from the arm. In his book in 1597 he also described similar techniques to repair the nose and ear. Tagliacozzi also devised the supporting harness for the arm. Tagliacozzi greatly improved plastic surgery techniques. Plastic surgery has been known since the third century BC when Amynthas of Alexandria performed the first operation on a nose.
