Caption: Radium face cream. Advertisement for Tho-Radia, a radium and thorium-based facial cream. This French cream was marketed as a revolution in facial beauty. In 1933, when the advert was produced, radioactive elements such as radium and thorium were still considered beneficial to health. Radium was discovered in 1898 by the French scientists Marie and Pierre Curie. Marie Curie died from leukaemia brought on from working with radioactive elements the year after this advertisement was produced.
