Caption: Construction of the circular tunnel of the Altern- ating Gradient Synchrotron (AGS) accelerator at the Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island, New York, in the late 1950s. The AGS accelerator started operations in July 1960, when it acceler- ated protons to an energy of 24 GeV.
