Caption: Caesarean childbirth. Historical artwork of a doctor about to begin a Caesarean birth. Caesarean sections are performed when there are difficulties during childbirth. While they have been carried out since Roman times, until the 19th century, when anaesthetics and aseptic surgical techniques were introduced, they were extremely risky for the mother. This woodcut by Jonas Arnold was made in the 16th century.
