Caption: Light micrograph of epidermal cells on the surface of the leaf of the common ash, Fraxinus excelsior. Clearly visible are many stomata, pores in the leaf surface, which allow the passage of gases through the otherwise impermeable layer of epidermal cells. Stomata allow atmospheric carbon dioxide into the leaf and molecular oxygen out. Each stoma has two 'guard' cells, one on each side of the central pore. These cells expand or contract to regulate the passage of the gases to suit the requirements of the plant. Magnification x400 at 35mm size.
