Caption: Flora and Cupid. Frontispiece of Erasmus Darwin's The Botanic Garden (1789-92) Flora, the Roman goddess of flowers, youth and spring, at play with Cupid, the Roman god of love. Erasmus Darwin (1731-1802) was a physician, biologist, engineer and poet. His interest in science was expressed through tediously pedantic, stilted poetry, now judged to have no literary merit. He is chiefly remembered as the grandfather of Charles Darwin, who conceived the theory of evolution by natural selection.
