Caption: Apelike humans. Historical engraving of apelike humans of the genus Homo. The creatures have a jumble of human and ape characteristics. The figure at left is covered in fur, but has a human form. The next creature has smooth skin over most of its body, but also has a tail and fur on its head. The seated ape at right is displaying a human like posture. These incorrect ideas may be due to inaccurate observation of apes and pygmies in the early years of African exploration. This engraving is from E. Hoppius' Anthropomorpha of 1760.
