Caption: Tree of mammals. Historical artwork by Ernst Haeckel organising all mammals, including humans, into families, genera, and species on the basis of progressive skeletonization. The decision, however, to arrange these groups on an ascending scale of development has led to ideas that have been seriously misused by eugenicists and Nazis. This was the first detailed evolutionary tree, published in Haeckel's General Morphology of Organisms (1866).
