Caption: Light micrograph of a transverse section through the needle (leaf) of a pine tree, Pinus sp. . The centre of the leaf is occupied by two vascular bundles (butterfly-shaped region, centre), each one made up of a group of xylem tracheids (black) and a group of phloem elements (large pink areas). These are surrounded by a thick pericycle (brown) and a layer of endodermis (necklace-like ring of large dark cells). The tissue surrounding the endodermis is known as mesophyll. It is composed of cells with characteristically infolded walls, and contains seven large resin ducts. Magnification: x63 at 35mm size.
