Caption: Light micrograph of a transverse section through the base of a pair of young needles (leaves) from a pine tree, Pinus sp. . Several species of pine bear their needles in pairs like this, each needle having a semi- circular cross-section. The large, kidney-shaped regions at the centre of each leaf are composed of two vascular bundles (small, pale cells) surrounded by a thick pericycle (large reddish cells) and a layer of endodermis (necklace-like chain of cells). Surrounding this is a thick layer of mesophyll, composed of cells with characteristically infolded walls. Magnification unknown.
