Caption: Trichomes. False-colour scanning electron micro- graph (SEM) of trichomes on the leaf of Fremontia californica. Trichomes are outgrowths from the leaf epidermis and some have elaborate shapes. Trichomes may have a definite function, such as providing a defence against pests as is the case in this Fremontia californica plant. Trichomes may also form into cotton-like fibres to assist seed dispersal. Magnification: x160 at 6x4.5cm size.
