Caption: Section through a pine needle. Light micrograph of a stained transverse section of a leaf (needle) from a pine tree Pinus sp. The outer skin, epidermis, is seen as an outer pink layer. Just inside this is the pale pink hydrodermis. The large blue/red area is the mesophyll, with two circular resin ducts (white). The large white area at centre is the pericycle, separated from the mesophyll by a single layer of endodermis (pale pink). At each side of the pericycle are bundles of conducting cells: the phloem (pink, regular arrangement) and the xylem (pale blue). Magnification: x90 at 35mm size.
