Caption: Compact bone. Polarised light micrograph of a transverse section through compact long bone. The Haversian canals (HC, blue circles) contain the nerves, blood and lymphatic vessels (not seen). Concentric bony layers, the lamellae (rings), enclose each HC. Several Haversian systems consisting of an HC and its lamellae can be seen here. Osteocytes, cells that as osteoblasts formed the lamellae, are now trapped in spaces called lacunae (black dots). Between adjacent lacunae and the HC are numerous interconnecting canals, the canaliculi (faint thin lines). The canaliculi allow circulation of tissue fluid and diffusion of metabolites. Magnification x25 at 5x7cm size.
