Caption: Mugwort leaf surface. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of hairs on a leaf of the medicinal plant mugwort, Artemisia vulgaris. The leaf surface is seen with its bumpy surface and many leaf hairs known as trichomes. Trichomes may serve a protective function for the plant, or reduce surface evaporation. Mugwort is a perennial plant which is used for its numerous medicinal properties. Whole plants are prepared into infusions, essences, and powders. Mugwort is used by herbal practitioners to treat symptoms ranging from stomach upsets to epilepsy and diabetes. Magnification: x80 at 6x6cm size.
