Caption: Perforate St. John's Wort. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph of the oil glands on the leaf surface of Perforate St. John's Wort, Hypericum perforatum. The characteristic bumpy appearance of the leaf surface is seen. This plant grows freely throughout Europe and the fresh flowering tips are collected as a herbal medication. In ancient times this plant was used to ward off evil spirits. The flowers can be prepared into infusions, syrups, oils and medicinal wines. It is used to treat symptoms such as wounds, chest complaints, intestinal worms and as an emmollient. Magnification: x440 at 6x6cm size.
