Spongy bone. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of human spongy (cancellous) bone. Found inside bones, below a dense shell of hard compact bone, spongy bone consists of a network of hard bars (trabeculae) honeycombed with spaces. These spaces are normally filled with bone marrow, which manufactures blood cells. Magnification unknown.
