Caption: Spongy bone tissue, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Spongy, or cancellous, bone is found in the central parts of bones. It is formed of a network of thin trabeculae, hard bars of fibrous material. The spaces between the trabeculae are filled with bone marrow, a tissue that produces blood cells. The outer parts of bones are made up of a different type of tissue called compact, or cortical, bone. Magnification: x43 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
