Caption: Osteoblast bone cells on a section of bone, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Osteoblasts are bone cells (osteocytes) in the process of forming new bone tissue. The cells produce osteoid, a matrix of collagen fibres and glycoproteins. Once this is produced by the cell, calcium salts crystallise inside it, making it hard and mineralised. Magnification: x250 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
