Caption: Spongy bone. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a close-up of a trabecula in human spongy (cancellous) bone. The trabecula (light brown) is the bar of bone across centre. It is a small part of a larger network of trabeculae that form the typical honeycombed structure of spongy bone. Two of the holes in this honeycomb structure are seen at upper right and lower left (dark brown). These spaces are normally filled with bone marrow, which manufactures blood cells. Within the bony material of the trabecula are small empty spaces that used to contain the osteocytes (bone cells) that formed the bone seen here.
