Caption: Bone cells. Light micrograph of osteoblast bone cells (purple). Osteoblasts are bone-forming cells. They produce osteoid, the organic bone matrix that is a mass of collagen fibres and glycoprotein cement. As soon as osteoid is formed, calcium salts crystallise inside it to form hard mineralised bone. As bone is formed the osteoblasts become trapped within bone cavities where they are known as osteocytes. Magnification: x450 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
