Caption: Macrophotograph of human spongy (cancellous) bone. It is composed of a network of bony elements called trabeculae, which form a maze of interconn- ecting spaces that house the bone marrow. The trabeculae are thin & composed of irregular layers (lamellae) of bone & osteocytes (bone-forming cells). Mature long bones in the skeleton consist of two types of lamellar bone: compact bone, which forms the exterior shaft; & spongy bone, which occupies part of the central medullary cavity of the bone. In immature animals the medullary cavities contain the active bone marrow which is responsible for production of blood cells. Magnification: x4 at 35mm size, x10 at 6x7cm size.
