Caption: Leaf hairs. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the scale-like leaf hairs on the underside of a leaf from an olive tree, Olea europaea. These multi-celled leaf hairs prevent evaporative water loss from the stomata during dry conditions or high winds. Stomata are the tiny lip-like openings scattered over the surface of the leaf, which regulate gaseous exchange with the environment. The leaf hairs help the olive tree to survive in the hot and seasonally dry climates in which it lives. Magnification: x330 at 6x6cm size.
