Caption: Runner bean leaf hairs. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the surface of the leaf of the runner bean plant (Phaseolus coccineus). Numerous leaf hairs (known as trichomes) are seen on the leaf surface. These trichomes have various functions including protection of the surface tissue and control of water evaporation rate from the leaf's surface. There are also two open stomata visible at lower left. These holes can open and close in response to the needs of the plant. They allow gaseous exchange between the plant and the air. This plant is grown for its beans, which are a popular food.
