Caption: Normal lumbar spine. Coloured X-ray of a healthy human lumbar spine. The vertebrae of the lumbar (lower back) spine can be seen as a line of green/yellow squares. Next to them, on the right, is the spinal cord (yellow), which connects the nerves of the body to the brain. At the bottom left corner is the pelvis (green). The spine ends in this region with a set of fused bones, first the sacrum (lower centre), which follows on from the lowest vertebra, then the coccyx (dark blue, bottom right corner). At top left corner, the bottom of the rib cage can be seen (green). These bones provide support and protection to the nerves and organs in the abdomen.
