Caption: X-ray of hand. Coloured X-ray of the healthy hand of a 12 year old child. The bones in the human hand include the carpal bones of the wrist (at lower centre), the five metacarpals (near centre) of the palm, and the fourteen phalanges in the fingers and thumb. There are three phalanges in each finger and two in the thumb (at centre left). There are large spaces in the carpals, and between the metacarpals and phalanges as these bones are still growing.
