Caption: Vertebrae. Conceptual artwork of healthy human vertebrae from the spine showing each as a human figure supporting the one above it. Between the vertebrae are intervertebral discs (blue), soft pads which cushion the bones and allow movement. 33 vertebrae in total make up the spinal column, which protects the spinal cord (not seen), a bundle of nerves which extends from the brain. Each vertebra has bony projections (at their left) which provide attachment sites for the muscles and ligaments that hold the spine together.
