Caption: Healthy knee. Side-view X-ray of a healthy knee of a 7-year-old girl. This X-ray shows the bones that meet at the knee. The large bone at the top is the femur (thigh bone). The small bone to the right of this is the patella, or kneecap. Below and to the left of the femur is the tibia (shin bone), and running next to this is the smaller fibula (lower left). Large spaces are seen in this joint as much growth of bone has still to occur in a child of this age. The knee joint works like a hinge, allowing backwards and forwards movement, and slight rotation can occur when the knee is bent.
