Hand bones. X-ray of a healthy human left hand, showing its 27 bones. Each finger comprises three phalanx bones, while the thumb contains two. The bones of the palm are the five metacarpals, which link the finger and thumb bones to the eight small carpal bones of the wrist. The carpal bones attach to the two lower arm bones (bottom left). The two lower arm bones are the ulna and the radius (thumb side). This bone arrangement allows the hand to be very flexible.
