Caption: Leaf hairs. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of gland hairs (brown) on the leaf of a Pelargonium ignes ornamental plant. Small thorns (grey) are also seen. The gland hairs produce a highly aromatic oil which acts as a deterrent to predatory insects. Also seen on the leaf's surface are stomata (three at centre left), small openings which regulate gas exchange between the leaf's interior and the atmosphere. Pelargoniums are popular ornamental plants due to their fragrant leaves and bright showy flowers. Magnification: x240 at 6x7cm size. x380 at 4x5".
