Caption: colour enhanced MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) showing the sagital (lateral) view of the normal anatomy of the lumbar vertebrae. This also clearly shows the termination of the spinal cord (conus medularis) at L1-2. The roots of the lumbar spine are seen as thin linear structures going through the black cerebrospinal fluid. The roots are collectively called the cauda equina (horses tail) because this is what all of the roots together resemble.
