Caption: Knee joint from the front (left) and side (right), coloured X-rays. The knee is the largest joint in the human body. It is formed from the articulation of the thigh bone (femur, top) with the shin bone (tibia, larger of the two lower bones). The thinner bone in the lower leg is the fibula. The front of the joint is protected by the kneecap (patella). This is best seen in the side view, where it is just to the left of the base of the femur. The patella is a sesamoid bone, one that is enclosed within a tendon.
