Caption: This sagital MRI image shows the normal appearance of the lumbar spine (lower back). There are 5 lumbar vertebral bodies and 5 sacral segments. The spinal cord ends in the upper lumbar region, towards the top of the image. The nerve roots of the spinal canal below the spinal cord look like a horses tail and therefore called the cauda equina.
