Caption: Sage leaf oil glands. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of hairs and glands on a leaf of the herb sage, Salvia officinalis. On the leaf surface are two types of hairs, called trichomes. Many thin multicellular hairs which serve a protective function for the plant, or reduce surface evaporation. Spherical structures are modified glandular hairs which secrete oils associated with the odour and essence of sage. The leaves of sage are used for cooking. They also have medicinal properties which reduce fever, cleanse the blood, relieve pain, and are antiseptic. Magnification: x241 at 5x7cm size.
