Caption: Hand anatomy. Macro photograph of a section through an adult hand. The back of the hand is at top. Muscles are brown, bones are white and tendons are pink. This section goes through the bases of the metacarpal bones (across top), the bones that extend from the wrist, through the palm, to the finger and thumb bones (phalanges). The tendons at centre extend from the flexor digitorum profundus and flexor digitorum superficialis muscles, which run down the forearm and extend the fingers. This slide dates from 1904.
