Caption: Baby's skull. Coloured X-ray of the normal skull of a baby. The main part of the skull is the cranium (centre) which encloses the brain. Most of the bones that make up the cranium have fused and only dark joins called sutures remain. However some of the bones are still fusing, leaving membrane-covered gaps called fontanelles. The anterior fontanelle is the dark area at upper centre. The bones of the face (lower right) include the jaw in which unerupted teeth can be seen.
