Monkey skull. Coloured X-ray of a side view of the skull of a monkey. The cranium (brain-case) at upper right is considerably smaller than in humans; the mandible bone of the lower jaw is large for the attachment of powerful muscles for chewing. The monkey, like the apes, feeds largely on plant and vegetable matter. Flattened molar teeth serve to grind down vegetable matter; the canines are often large and dagger-like (seen here) frequently used as weapons of defence and in dominance displays.
