Caption: Skeletal muscles. Coloured historical engraving (dated 1880) showing the human skeletal muscle system. Both posterior and anterior views of a standing male figure are seen. Dissection of some muscles in the posterior view is evident. Skeletal muscles are attached to bones of the skeleton by tendons. Also known as voluntary muscles, these muscles are under direct conscious control. Skeletal muscle accounts for up to 45 per cent of body weight.
