Caption: Skeletal muscle system. Illustration of the muscles and skeleton of a human body seen from behind. The tendons (white) join the muscles (pink) together and attach the muscles to the skeleton (yellow). The skeleton alone is shown on the right. The human body contains some 600 muscles, most of which are skeletal (voluntary) muscles under conscious control. Movement is by muscular contraction, aided and controlled by the bones and joints. Contraction occurs as tiny protein filaments in the muscle slide over one another. The contraction acts on the attached bones, resulting in joint movement.
