Caption: Light micrograph of normal human cardiac muscle. The muscle fibres are stained pink & show fine cross striations throughout their length. Dark lines perpendicular to the fibres are intercalated discs, where the muscle fibres are joined end to end. The fibre bundles are interconnected across the interstitial connective tissue, which appears as a clear space. The nuclei of the muscle cells are stained purple; the bright blue objects in the connective tissue space are the nuclei of fibrocytes. These cells produce a network of reticular and fine collagenous fibres. Magnification x100 at 35mm size.
