Caption: Smooth muscle in human oviduct. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of the human oviduct, showing smooth muscle. The oviduct or Fallopian tube is the channel which conducts the female egg from the ovary (where it is formed) to the uterus where the fertilized egg develops into an embryo. Here, bands of smooth muscle cells (pink) are seen in the oviduct wall, which by their peristaltic action push the egg down the oviduct. They are surrounded by two flattened fibroblast cells (yellow), connective tissue cells which secrete thin strands of collagen (yellow). Magnification: x900 at 6x7cm size. x1,140 at 4x5"
