Caption: Striated muscle. Light micrograph of a longi- tudinal section through human striated muscle fibres. Striated muscle occurs in all skeletal muscles and its movement is under conscious (voluntary) control. Several muscle fibres are seen running diagonally from left to right, each being an elongated muscle cell. In each of these fibres can be seen cross-striations. These regular cross-striations are formed from myofibrils, structures of contractile proteins which cause the muscle cell to contract and relax. Dark oval shapes are nuclei which lie on the periphery of the cells. Magnification x100 at 35mm size.
