Caption: Heart muscle. Light micrograph of a longitudinal section through cardiac muscle tissue. Cardiac muscle is composed of a network of branching, elongated muscle cells (fibres, purple). The cells in a fibre are separated by intercalated discs (not seen) which allow electrical signals to travel rapidly between them. The cell nuclei are seen (round, dark purple) spaced out along each fibre's length. The cell network is infiltrated by connective tissue (white) that is rich in capillary blood vessels to supply oxygenated blood and remove wastes; red blood cells are seen stained brown. Magnification unknown.
